Calculation Logic & Methodology
Transparent rules and evaluation standardsUniversities outside your home country do not evaluate degrees on raw averages. They normalize your cumulative grade point average (CGPA) through statutory equivalency standards or linear interpolation formulas.
- Nmax = Maximum attainable grade (5.0 on Nigerian/Ghanaian scales, 4.0 on US scale, 10.0 in India)
- Nmin = Minimum passing grade (typically 1.0 or 2.0 depending on faculty handbook)
- Nd = Your actual cumulative GPA / CGPA
- Result: 1.0 is highest distinction (Sehr Gut), 4.0 is minimum pass, 5.0 is fail
- 5.0 scale: 4.50-5.00 maps to 3.80-4.00 (A)
- 5.0 scale: 3.50-4.49 maps to 3.00-3.79 (B+ / B)
- 5.0 scale: 2.40-3.49 maps to 2.30-2.99 (C+ / C)
- Below 2.40 maps to below 2.00 (Academic Probation threshold)
- First Class Honours (1st): 4.50 - 5.00 / 5.0, or 3.60 - 4.00 / 4.0, or 70%+ aggregate
- Second Class Upper (2:1): 3.50 - 4.49 / 5.0, or 3.00 - 3.59 / 4.0, or 60% - 69% aggregate
- Second Class Lower (2:2): 2.40 - 3.49 / 5.0, or 2.50 - 2.99 / 4.0, or 50% - 59% aggregate
- Third Class / Pass: 1.50 - 2.39 / 5.0, or 2.00 - 2.49 / 4.0
- Credit Weighting: Automated tools treat each credit equally. Official evaluators (WES, ECE) recalculate GPA by weighting major courses over general university electives.
- Borderline Discretion: A 3.48 CGPA sits on the boundary between 2:2 and 2:1. UK admissions tutors review final year modules and dissertation marks when making conditional offers.
- Indian 10-Point Scales: Many top Indian institutes require division criteria printed on the back of official grade sheets rather than direct linear conversion.
